Meet the Team
The Wing Centre is a residential special college for young men of 16 - 19 years who have Asperger syndrome.
For students living close to the Centre there is some flexibility for day provision. The Wing Centre is also the post-16 provision for students at Southlands School.
Staff work alongside students within an accepting environment geared to encouraging young men with AS to accept themselves, understand their diagnosis, tolerate others, build self-confidence and experience success as they make the transition to adult life.
This is achieved through specialist therapy and appropriate educational, social, emotional and vocational programmes that take account of AS learning styles. In addition, links with local colleges allow students to broaden their educational horizons in a mainstream environment.
Individualised plans are designed to meet specific needs and these plans form the basis of the three-way partnership between student, family and staff. A focused, enjoyable and calm atmosphere is encouraged at all times.
Everything we do is supported by a wide range of clinical and therapeutic inputs including:
- Speech & Language Therapy
- Behavioural Therapy
- Occupational Therapy
- Psychiatry
- Psychology
The Wing Centre also works with parents and students to secure suitable post-19 provision. For some of our students this might mean lifelong learning in another residential setting; for others it could mean accessing their local main stream college or university.
All students are supported throughout the process of transition and, wherever needed, help and guidance are given in an individual, person-centred way.
The Wing Centre’s location in Bournemouth allows students easy access to public transport, local amenities and shopping centres, where independence training further prepares them for life in the community.
