Shear Meadow

Shear Meadow provides intensive rehabilitation for men with learning disability. The focus at Shear Meadow is on achieving greater social inclusion and on improving daily living skills. Clinical and therapeutic input is provided by the multi disciplinary team of psychiatrists, psychologists, occupational therapists and nurses.

Shear Meadow is a large bungalow with spacious communal areas and a large, landscpaed garden with smaller plots in which patients are able to grow their own plants and vegetables. All bedrooms are en-suite and have recently been refurbished to a very high standard. Individuals are encouraged to personalise their rooms to their own tastes. There is a separate annexe, with bedroom and lounge which allows the resident to have more space as required. Staffing levels at Shear Meadow are high and qualified nurses are available 24 hours a day.

Shear Meadow is situated on the outskirts of the town of Hemel Hempstead, and within walking distance of the village of Bourne End. There are pleasant walks along the Grand Union canal and Hemel Hempstead town centre offers a good selection of local shops and amenities. For local shops and pubs, Bourne End is only a few minutes walk away. Hemel Hempstead is easily accessible by both road and rail.

Patients at Shear Meadow are supported in accessing local services, such as the local gym and college, and the regular Gateway club is popular. Many patients have their own bus passes and are supported to use public transport, but there is also a dedicated mini-bus available in addition to this.

• Primary diagnosis of learning disability and mental health complex needs
• Forensic history
• May present with co-morbid presentations:
  • Challenging behaviour
  • Personality disorder
  • Schizophrenia, depression, bi-polar disorder
  • Dual diagnosis
  • Complex needs and/or multiple diagnoses
• May be detained under the Mental Health Act or informal
• May have a history of repeated hospital admissions
