Active Learning™

Cambian's unique system of measurement is called Active Learning™, which informs the collaborative, multi-disciplinary approach to education, care and therapy.

Our Waking Day Curriculum provides Active Learning™  from the moment a student gets up in the morning until it's time to go to bed. Academically, across the schools and colleges, we cater for P-Levels – the learning that leads to National Curriculum Level 1 - through to A-levels. Class sizes are small, allowing for a high level of individual attention. Learning is supported with specialist inputs such as TEACCH, PECS, Makaton and Signalong.

Our teaching is appropriately differentiated to meet individual needs. In addition, we draw upon a proven programme of specialist education with a wide range of clinical and therapeutic inputs.

Teachers collaborate with Speech and Language Therapists, Clinical Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Paediatricians, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists and Care Service Managers to develop an individual programme for each student.

A significant part of the learning process is catered for in after-school, structured activities, all designed to identify and develop individual skills and talents.
Whether in the classroom, the dining room, at leisure or out in the community, activities are planned to provide for the maximum development and nurturing of our students.

Measuring progress towards a personal best

Step-by-step objectives detailed on Cambian’s Active Learning Wheel© allow all areas of a student’s life to be recorded and assessed. Progress can be measured objectively by our dedicated multi-disciplinary teams. Improvements can be celebrated and consolidated. Areas of difficulty can be identified and new objectives set.

Careful assessment on arrival at the school informs an Individual Education Plan for each student, evaluated and amended as need arises.

After the first three months, a full-scale review is carried out. Thereafter, reviews are held at six month intervals. Parents and representatives from placing authorities are always invited to attend.

Reports presented at the review outline progress and changes. Specific objectives are detailed as well as more general recommendations relating to the student’s development, such as behaviour management and leisure, self-help and community skills.
