A 52 week mixed gender registered residential unit for students aged 16-25 with autistic spectrum disorders or who have similar needs. Our young people will have associated learning difficulties and display challenging behaviours.
Amberwood is a satellite unit to Hill House, set up in order to extend our provision beyond school age. We offer expert care and encouragement in lifelong learning for our students. Emphasis is on developing life, vocational and intellectual skills that will support a successful transition into adult life.
Students’ communication is supported by a wide range of symbolic and photographic materials as visual clues to promote independence.
Dedicated clinical teams provide a multi-disciplinary input, including speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, behavioural therapy, psychology, psychiatry and vocational training.
Amberwood has been set up for young people for whom a more urban environment is required in order to practice independence skills.
Located in Poole, 30 minutes from the main Hill House site, Amberwood’s position is ideal for local shopping trips. Public transport is close at hand, giving easy access to shopping centres and larger city amenities.
Nearby countryside and coast provide opportunities for exercise and experiencing the joys of nature.
Time spent in the community is central to our young people’s development and, to this end, excursions are scheduled daily as appropriate to individual needs and tolerance levels.
We provide a homely environment for ten students. The two units were specifically designed to meet the needs of young people for whom a shared living experience can be a challenge. All bedrooms are single occupancy with en-suite shower facilities.
In addition to communal rooms, we have activity rooms including IT provision and a sensory room. There is a safe and secure garden for recreation and outside activities.
A Parent Liaison Officer is available to discuss, in confidence, a young person’s specific needs and we are delighted to help with any questions or to arrange a visit to the unit.
