A 52 week mixed gender registered residential unit for Young people aged 16-25 with autistic spectrum disorders, severe learning difficulties and associated challenging behaviour. Devon Lodge is a satellite unit to Hill House, set up in order to extend our provision beyond school age. Its emphasis is on developing life, vocational and intellectual skills that will support a successful transition into adult life.

The house is located in Hedge End Southampton. Devon Lodge is set in a large garden with rest and recreation areas. Perimeter fencing and automatic gates provide a safe and secure environment for the young people, yet not at the expense of a homely, comfortable atmosphere. Devon Lodge is situated in the heart of a busy local community; transport links within walking distance make it easily accessible to the wider community and the local shopping precinct is just around the corner.

Accessing the local community is an essential part of the daily life of our young people; this enables them to develop their independence and social skills with the appropriate support in a safe and familiar environment. The young people’s communication is supported by a wide range of symbolic and photographic materials as visual clues to promote independence.

Our philosophy and approach is centred on meeting specific individual needs using non-aversive positive intervention. A purposeful and calm atmosphere is encouraged through the consistency of approach adopted by all staff.

Dedicated clinical teams provide a multi-disciplinary input, including speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, behavioural therapy, psychology, psychiatry and vocational training. Accommodation has been carefully designed to meet the needs of the young people, including eight single bedrooms with en-suite shower facilities and two bathrooms.

Adjoining the spacious house is a smaller four bedroom property again with en-suite shower facilities; there is additional learning base equipped with a practical area, computers and an interactive whiteboard. We also have sensory rooms in each property.

A Parent Liaison Officer is available to discuss, in confidence, a young person’s specific needs and we are delighted to help with any questions or to arrange a visit to the unit.
