OAASIS
Office for assistance, advice, support and information on special educational needs
Established in 1996, OAASIS aims to provide parents and teachers with impartial, comprehensive and prompt answers to the many questions and problems which looking after or teaching a child with SEN may present. It is a part of the Cambian Group, one of the largest providers of independent residential special schools and colleges in the UK.
We provide advice based on experience, research, attending seminars and workshops and access to the specialist Cambian Education team. We deal with each individual query confidentially, sympathetically - and quickly.
In 2008 OAASIS dealt with approximately 1,731 enquiries. In 2009 we dealt with 2,346 enquiries. Most of these are from parents who are desperately trying to find out information on the help their child should be receiving at school; on how to approach their LEA for a Statutory Assessment and Statement; where to go for individual family support; how to find suitable special schools and colleges. We also answer queries from teaching staff, social workers and other professionals.
We also have a list of holiday and respite care suitable for ASD, adult homes and supported living for ASD, emergency and crisis placements and a wealth of information from other sources.
OAASIS attends 4 to 5 major Special Needs and Education exhibitions a year. This is a chance for us to meet and talk face to face with people who work or look after children and young people with special educational needs. It is also a chance for us to see what SEN resources and other organisations are available so that we can pass this information on.
