It’s important you feel confident enough to care for a foster child or young person sufficiently and be able to provide them with a high-level of care, that’s why we offer an extensive range of training to develop your skills as a foster parent. You may want to gain new qualifications or train to further enhance your fostering skills. Our bespoke training will help to build on the qualities, skills and life experiences you may already have. Our therapeutic approach means we treat and train foster parents as professionals and provide them with the tools to build strong relationships with the foster children that come into their care. We want everyone to feel confident and secure in your work and that’s why we work with you to identify training to meet the individual needs of yourself, your foster child and your family.
Our extensive training programme includes more than 20 courses and workshops, some which are mandatory and others which are optional. This is essential and relevant learning to help you become the best foster parent you can be. You’ll also have the option to study for a recognised academic qualification in partnership with two leading universities, resulting in higher pay promotion too.
Fostering Training Courses

They are designed to give you valuable skills and help to build confidence in your fostering work. Our courses are run by fully-qualified and knowledgeable members of our team that are leaders in their field of even have experience of fostering themselves.
Creating a positive, therapeutic environment for our foster children is one of our core values, that’s why our training is based around this notion so we’ll help you to understand and implement this in your fostering. When foster parents have completed this training they will be able to:
✓ Distinguish between therapeutic fostering and therapy
✓ Identify how they can provide a therapeutic environment for children
The therapeutic training courses cover behaviour management, to help you understand why children do what they do and be aware of the triggers and patterns that may occur. You’ll learn how behaviour can be communicated and is also helpful in developing skills such as listening, empathy, trustworthiness and acceptance.
Certificate in Therapeutic Fostering Qualification
The Certificate in Therapeutic Fostering (CTF) is a one-year course covering therapeutic theories combined with social work ideas to help understand why children and others do what they do; and how adults can help. Using oneself as a barometer for what’s going on, and as a tool for skilled and insightful intervention. Students of the course get to know their own sensitive spots, and boost their resilience - all within the particular context of fostering. The University of Greenwich rates this programme for 60 credits at academic level 6. When taught by a tutor with the required qualification it is also recognised as a year of Transactional Analysis, Psychotherapy or Counselling training and counts towards the professional qualification. The credits can be used as pathway into an MA programme even with no prior qualifications.
