Our services offer more than just specialists and treatments. We value our women's strengths, abilities, and viewpoints and we seek to listen to them and understand.
Frequently, the women who come into our care with Personality Disorder have greater emotional needs extending from anxiety, mood and psychosocial issues, which may lead to self-harm. We support them with a psychology-led approach which aims at developing self-regulation skills facilitating the control of impulsive behavious. Female patients with complex mental health needs such as schizophrenia and depression benefit from our OT-led approach which aims at unlocking their talents and aspirations to achieve supported living or independence.
Cambian Aspire - a specialist self-harm awareness recovery programme
Cambian Aspire is a new psychology-led programme which focuses on active self-harm prevention, which promotes independence and reduction of emotional distress often associated with Personality Disorder. Patients are encouraged to formulate their own coping strategies to reduce self-harm and manage maladaptive behaviours.
Mothers in our care
Some of the women who come into our care who are mothers may have experienced difficulties in having contact with their children. In some cases, through no fault of their own. At Cambian, in helping this group of patients to achieve their ambitions, we never underestimate the importance of family roles. Depending on legal custodial requirements and thorough risk assessments, we will do our best to liaise with social services and the patient's family to facilitate meetings between child and mother. In addition, we are able to offer programmes such as rediscovering parental skills (where appropriate), which involves looking at family roles and good child care.
We understand the importance of family support and social networks in the lives of the women we care for. Our patients' families can sometimes provide our multi-disciplinary team with insight into the emotional difficulties they may be facing. Equally, we also understand families could benefit from interventions which contribute towards the recovery of their loved ones.
Where appropriate, we may be able to offer family intervention therapies, which include:
- Psycho-education involving the family in relapse prevention management
- Family support including guidance on:
- Understanding the diagnosis and behaviour disturbances
- Exploring relative relationship patterns and problem-solving
- Coping mechanisms
- Discussion of difficult subjects
- Family role and social functioning
