County Cricket success for ‘Incredible’ James

A student from Grateley House School has seen his passion and dedication for cricket rewarded, after being selected to play for the Old Tauntonians and Romsey Cricket Club team.

Last year, James represented Grateley at the Kwik Cricket schools tournament and following his success he went for a trial in January for the Hampshire Special Needs Schools team, accompanied by Rich Pearce, a Grateley teaching assistant.

James did so well in his trial and following matches that he was asked to join the Under-16s Hampshire County Cricket squad. Dubbed ‘The Incredibles’, his team will be playing in August at The Ageas Bowl, the home of Hampshire County Cricket Club, in Southampton.

Head of Grateley House School Sue King said: “When James was younger he only ever played cricket by himself in the garden at home. During his mainstream schooling he wasn’t allowed to play in any team but since joining Grateley House School he has had the opportunity to play and has been encouraged at every opportunity to develop his love for the game.”

James now trains regularly with the team and the Hampshire Coach for special teams, Rick Kellaway, has asked him to become a permanent member of the mainstream Old Tauntonians and Romsey Cricket Club.

Mrs King concluded by saying: “Everyone is very proud of James, his hard work and success is an inspiration to us all and we wish him the best of luck in pursuing his love of cricket. By encouraging his passion for the game, his teachers were able to transpose his enthusiasm into other areas of his studies and he is making fantastic progress.”
