Residential Autism Schools: Where Care Comes First

At Cambian, we offer specialist residential and boarding schools for children with autism and special educational needs (SEN), providing 38 to 52 weeks of care, therapy, and education in a safe, structured and nurturing environment outside the family home.

For many children with autism, navigating the world can feel overwhelming. Our residential autism schools provide the structure, consistency, and emotional support that help them feel secure and thrive.

At our Schools, care comes first - through personalised routines, therapeutic support, and communication strategies that meet each child where they are.

We provide consistent, structured environments where care, learning, and wellbeing come together, helping every child grow in confidence and independence.

What is a Residential Autism School?

A residential (boarding) school provides children and young people with a safe, structured environment where care, therapy, and education are integrated. For children with autism, it means living in a supportive setting outside the family home, with 24/7 supervision, personalised routines, and specialist staff trained to understand their individual needs.

Whilst education is an important part of the experience, the heart of a residential school is providing consistency, emotional support, and opportunities to develop life skills - helping children feel secure, build confidence, and thrive both socially and academically.

For many families, residential placements provide:

  • Stability and structure that home or day schools may not always offer
  • Specialist staff trained in autism education and therapies
  • A safe, supportive community where children can thrive socially and emotionally
  • 38–52 week placements: Tailored care and education throughout the year
  • 24/7 support: Consistent routines in a safe, nurturing setting
  • Expert staff: Teachers, carers, and therapists experienced in autism support
  • Life skills & independence: Building confidence for adulthood
  • Opportunities to form friendships and grow within a peer community

A Journey of Transformation in Residential Care

In this video, Michelle Turner, Head of Education at Cambian Whinfell School, shares the inspiring story of a young person who arrived feeling anxious, withdrawn, and uncertain about his future.

Through consistent encouragement, personalised support, and the stability of a specialist residential environment, he began to re-engage with daily life and grow in confidence.

His story reflects the heart of what we do - creating nurturing, structured homes where children and young people with autism can feel safe, understood, and supported.
