During the summer holidays, one of our college tutor's Richard demonstrated remarkable calmness and bravery in a real-life emergency. While visiting a local market with friends, they noticed a young boy at a nearby table begin to choke while eating pizza.
As the boy’s grandparents struggled to help, our Richard quickly stepped in to assist. Using the first aid techniques he had learned just the day before in a school first aid training course, he encouraged the child to cough while leaning him forward and administering firm back blows. When that didn’t immediately work, he began abdominal thrusts, after a few thrusts, a piece of mozzarella was dislodged, and the child was able to breathe again.
Richard later said, “Having the confidence to perform first aid was almost wholly due to the fact that I had completed a first aid training course the day before.”
This inredible act proves just how valuable life skills such as first aid can be.
