Specialist Education

At Pengwern College, residential care is at the heart of everything we do. We provide outstanding, year-round residential support for young people aged 16 - 25 with moderate to severe learning disabilities and complex needs, including autism, ADHD, communication difficulties, and associated challenges.

Our commitment to excellence has been recognised through three “Excellent” ratings awarded by the Care Inspectorate Wales (CIW) - a reflection of the high standards, compassion, and professionalism that define life at Pengwern.

Set within 23–29 acres of peaceful North Wales countryside near Rhuddlan, our campus offers a safe, nurturing, and therapeutic environment where young people are supported to grow, develop independence, and truly feel at home.

Creating homes, not services

We believe residential care should feel warm, personal, and empowering. At Pengwern, young people don’t simply live here, they belong here.

  • Six modern coach houses on our main campus provide 52-week residential accommodation
  • Three spacious community houses in St Asaph support progression towards greater independence and community living
  • Bedrooms are fully personalised, reflecting each young person’s identity, preferences, and comfort
  • Young people are encouraged to take part in group decisions within their homes, building confidence, choice, and responsibility

Each house is supported by a consistent, dedicated staff team who truly know the young people they care for, fostering trust, stability, and emotional security.

Our Values

We have a common set of five values that define us:

Friendly

Positive

Innovative

Empowering

Person-Centred

We are proud to say that our staff wholly embody each of these qualities. The values are the spirit in which we do things around here, whether it is getting things right first time or making sure our behaviours towards each other are underpinned with a fun, fair friendly approach.

As these principles are paramount to our mission of delivering the best possible care, we arrange values-based training to ensure all new starters are apprised of the significance to their daily work.
