Specialist Education

Pengwern Main Site consists of six homes, including the Garden Cottage and five Coach Houses, ranging from two to four bedrooms, with a total capacity for fifteen young people (15 bedrooms). The site provides a welcoming and supportive residential environment for young people aged 16 and over with additional and complex needs.

Each home provides a warm and comfortable shared living environment where young people are supported to develop essential life skills. Living alongside others fosters personal growth, builds confidence, and encourages the development of meaningful relationships, while also enhancing social skills and emotional wellbeing.

Set within a large and scenic environment in North Wales, near the historic town of Rhuddlan, Pengwern offers extensive outdoor space that enhances quality of life.

The on-site farm is a valued feature of the service, providing young people with regular opportunities to engage with animals and nature in a meaningful and therapeutic way.

The surrounding area offers a range of accessible amenities. Nearby towns including Rhyl, Prestatyn and Llandudno provide access to shops, leisure facilities and transport links. Local attractions such as Rhuddlan Nature Reserve and Rhyl Beach offer further opportunities for recreation, relaxation and community engagement.

Every young person is carefully assessed prior to admission to ensure their individual needs can be met effectively. Support levels are tailored accordingly and reviewed regularly, allowing for adjustments as needs change over time.

Due to the complex needs of the young people we support, most individuals receive enhanced staffing ratios, typically on a 1:1 or 2:1 basis during the day. Overnight, waking night staff are in place to provide consistent support and reassurance, ensuring a safe and responsive environment at all times.

Together, these elements create a safe, structured and enriching environment where young people are supported to build independence, confidence and essential life skills for adulthood.

The care and support provided to young people is excellent. We observed young people receiving care and support from care staff in a manner that was both compassionate and respectful. Care staff have developed trusting relationships with young people, and provide person-centred care that promotes well-being, safety, and positive outcomes.

Care staff demonstrate genuine empathy and attentiveness, engaging with young people through calm, supportive communication.

Feedback from a parent further supports this; “Pengwern has transformed my child’s life. With his complex learning and developmental needs, he is now able to live a safe, secure, and happier life … I couldn’t recommend Pengwern more.”

This statement reflects Pengwern’s positive impact on young people’s well-being and development, highlighting the value of personalised care
