Specialist Education

On the 8th May at Lufton College, we are celebrating World Donkey Day and recognising the incredible role donkeys have played throughout history,  and indeed continue to play across the world today. Many people may not realise just how important donkeys have been, and still are, in supporting through transporting goods, , pulling carts, ploughing fields, and carrying heavy loads sometimes across difficult environments such as underground in mines and across mountainous terrain.

Here in the UK, many people will also fondly remember the traditional seaside donkeys who have brought joy to generations of families on beaches across the country – in fact our own Sheamus spent much of his career as a Beach Boy on Blackpool Beach – no doubt providing countless children with long lasting memories.

Donkeys are intelligent, gentle and highly social animals. Sadly, many donkeys across the world still experience neglect, mistreatment and exhausting workloads, which is why World Donkey Day is also about raising awareness of donkey welfare and the importance of kindness, protection and proper care for these amazing animals.

Here at Lufton College, our own big-eared loves, Sheamus, Tily and Star are a very special part of college life. For many of our students, spending time with the donkeys supports confidence, communication, emotional wellbeing and independence through meaningful animal care experiences.

From feeding and grooming to simply enjoying quiet time together, they bring calm, routine, comfort and plenty of character to Lufton college every single day. Even the heavy-duty mucking out has its benefits, with some students finding the physical routine and sense of achievement surprisingly therapeutic!

A huge thank you to the students and staff who help care for them and of course to Sheamus, Tily and Star for all the joy they bring to Lufton College.

Happy World Donkey Day!
