The beginning of the journey
When the young person first arrived at one of our residential homes, they were in their mid-teens and had previously been living in a crisis placement with a high level of support.
The move enabled them to return closer to familiar surroundings and continue their education at their previous school, where they were supported to complete their GCSEs.
Developing resilience
While living at the home, the young person completed a specialist programme designed to increase their understanding of risk and help them make safer, more informed choices.
With consistent support from the team, they gradually developed greater resilience and confidence within the local community. This progress helped prepare them for the next stage of their journey and a move into supported accommodation.
Taking steps towards independence
Since moving into supported accommodation, the young person has continued to develop essential skills for adulthood. These have included learning to manage their money, look after their mental health and navigate the world of work.
The move has given them greater independence while ensuring that consistent, individualised support remains available whenever it is needed.
Providing support through challenges
Although there have been challenges along the way, the small and nurturing environment has allowed the team to respond quickly and provide the focused support needed to manage risk and restore stability.
This personalised approach would have been more difficult to provide within a larger shared setting. It has enabled the team to work closely with the young person, adapting their support as their needs and circumstances have changed.
Looking towards the future
At the young person’s most recent review, both they and their placing authority were extremely pleased with the progress they had made.
It was agreed that they should remain within the supported accommodation service until adulthood, allowing them to continue building their confidence, independence and readiness for the future.
