About Whinfell School
Whinfell School is an independent residential specialist school and care home set in the beautiful surroundings of Kendal, Cumbria. We provide education, care and clinical support for up to 18 young people aged 7 to 19 with autism and associated complex needs, welcoming students from across the country on both a residential and day basis. Rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted on five consecutive occasions, we take a fully integrated and personalised approach, following the National Curriculum while tailoring learning and support to each young person’s individual needs, strengths and aspirations.
With small classes of no more than three students, our dedicated teams work closely across education, care and clinical services to provide stability, consistency and a strong sense of belonging. Our rural Lake District location offers opportunities for Therapeutic Outdoor Learning (TOL), with outdoor spaces for PE and recreation, creating an environment where young people can develop their skills, confidence and independence and reach their personal best.
Working at Whinfell means becoming part of a friendly, supportive and close-knit team, with a strong network of internal professionals and the opportunity to make a meaningful difference to young people’s lives. We offer genuine opportunities for career progression, alongside an employee discount scheme and contributory pension. We also cover the cost of required background checks, helping make joining the Whinfell team as straightforward as possible.

What makes Whinfell unique?
Many of our young people have experienced significant disruption to their education and may arrive with low self-belief, social isolation and complex needs. At Whinfell, we believe strong, trusting relationships are the foundation for growth and learning, which is why we prioritise ‘connections before corrections’.
By understanding and addressing individual barriers, we create the conditions for young people to re-engage with education, develop their skills, confidence and independence, and achieve their potential as they prepare for further education, employment and adult life.
Therapeutic outdoor learning (TOL) is one of the cornerstones of our curriculum at Cambian Whinfell School. Situated within the beautiful location of the Lake District, the breathtaking outdoor environment, with stunning views surrounding Whinfell School makes Therapeutic Outdoor Learning a wonderful, immersive and enjoyable experience for students.
