Building Confidence and Connection Through Horses: A Heartwarming Journey
At Whinfell School, our Changing Lives Through Horses programme continues to inspire and nurture the growth of our young people. Recently, two participants made remarkable strides in their confidence, teamwork, and emotional well-being through their interactions with the gentle ponies.
One young person experienced a significant breakthrough by spending extended time in the stable with a calm and gentle pony. Initially cautious, he gradually relaxed as he engaged in slow, mindful grooming—almost like a massage—which helped both him and the pony feel at ease. Showing growing confidence, he carefully removed the pony’s headcollar and successfully guided her around the stable using the lead rein. His sense of achievement was celebrated with a rosette marking the completion of his first term in the programme, along with a special keepsake from the farrier. He left the session beaming, sharing his success with heartfelt enthusiasm.
Meanwhile, another young person embraced the session with great enthusiasm, taking on the role of chef by preparing homemade horse treats with grated apple and carrot. The ponies eagerly enjoyed the snacks, and the young person delighted in observing the farrier at work, asking thoughtful questions and helping to keep the stable tidy. Demonstrating increasing independence, he confidently put the pony’s headcollar on and held the lead rope while his peer groomed the pony, showcasing excellent teamwork. His efforts were rewarded with a rosette and a festive card, which he proudly planned to share back at school.
These heartwarming stories reflect the profound impact of equine-assisted activities in helping our young people overcome barriers, build confidence, and develop meaningful connections. The programme fosters a calm, nurturing environment where each young person’s unique journey is supported and celebrated.
We look forward to continuing this journey of growth and achievement with all our participants.
