Mind of My Own

Introducing the Mind of My Own App

Encouraging young people to speak up at anytime they want

We communicate with our young people in many ways and nothing will ever replace a trusted positive relationship where a young person feels loved and cared for. In such an environment young people feel safe and confident to express their thoughts wishes and feelings directly with us. But for some young people they really struggle and the 'Mind Of My Own' app offers us an alternative option, another way for them to let us know exactly what’s going on.

Even as adults we must admit that at times in difficult situations an email is the best way to get a conversation or discussion started. Well this is what Mind Of My Own is offering the young people it’s a tool to assist with communication and in structuring thoughts and feelings via preloaded scenarios. Young people can navigate through the scenarios on their own or with support from a key worker. This is a form of communication that young people are comfortable with, i.e social media, and this is why we have ensured that every young person living at any of our Residential, Education or Foster Homes can make use of either the 'One app' or 'Express' app. Some young people may use it as their main form of communication and other’s only when encouraged but the main thing for us is that it’s live and accessible and even one year since we added this to our core offering, the young people and us have seen the benefits.

Watch the video below where Headteacher Clare Gammons talks about the positive impact Mind Of My Own has had on young people and staff at Wisbech School.

1000 Statements

In 2021 we reached the milestone of 1000 statements. This information gave us a better insight into what our young people are saying and reassurance that in most cases we are getting it right

Communication

We have many young people who prefer to use Mind of My Own as their main form of communication to open a dialog for further discussion with us. Others use it sparingly but when they do, it's to tell us something quite powerful

Safety Link

Mind of My Own has a safety feature that is triggered by our young people using certain comments when describing how they feel. This allows us to quickly identify young people that may need that additional support

"For those children that can't download the app or might not have the cognitive ability to navigate that, the Express app is also really positive. What better way than to capture the child's voice and their own progress; how they felt through the whole journey of living at the home."
