Specialist Education

Here at Cambian Tyldesley are super proud to announce that 9 students out of our 11 students on the Fresh Start phonics programme have successfully graduated. This is amazing news that we as a school are thrilled to share.

Through the rapid intervention of the Fresh Start programme, we have fostered a love of reading in our students. Their confidence to decode words has allowed them to access a range of texts across a broad variety of genres, and they are now able to tackle written material in school, to build transferable employability skills and enable them to have literacy skills for life.

Fresh Start is a catch-up and intervention programme with proven results, for 9 to 13-year-olds still learning to read. It offers a simple but powerful solutions to accelerate reading progress.

This programme was developed by Ruth Miskin, Fresh Start teaches students at their challenge point, so they learn to read accurately and fluently. They develop good comprehension, spelling and punctuation skills through targeted activities.

Since graduating from their phonics intervention, the majority of the students have gone on to join our newly formed lunchtime book clubs. The book clubs focus on an author per term that we research and then read some of their stories. The current author is Roald Dahl and we are reading Charlie and the chocolate factory.

We as a school cannot wait to share more of our phonics success stories.
