Back to School Without the Meltdowns

Support During the School Term

Building Strong Partnerships with Schools
Once your child starts school, regular communication and early intervention are key to long-term success.

Share What Matters Most
Provide a clear profile for school staff - including your child’s interests, triggers, communication style, and calming strategies. Tools like an "All About Me" passport can be created together with your child.

Be a Thoughtful Advocate
Speak up when needed, but also ask the school how best to communicate concerns without overwhelming the team. Build relationships, be concise, and follow up verbal conversations with quick emails.

Stay Connected
Agree on regular check-ins with a named staff contact. Use communication books or apps, and update the school on your child’s wellbeing at home. Ask about traffic-light systems or visuals that help children share how they’re feeling.

Recognise the Signs of Struggle
Look out for sleep problems, emotional outbursts, school refusal, or regression. Intervene early, speak to SENCOs or support staff, and work together to adjust support.
