Cambian Lufton College

Therapies and Clinical Support

Speech & Language Therapy (SLT)

SLT at Lufton College is delivered through a tiered model to ensure all students receive appropriate communication support. Universal provision includes an individual Communication Profile accessible to education and care staff, staff guidance and training, promotion of an inclusive communication environment, contribution to cross-college goals, multi-disciplinary team (MDT) involvement, and responsive ad-hoc support.

Where additional needs are identified, targeted or specialist input may include individualised therapy programmes, 1:1 or group sessions, AAC support, therapy assistant-led practice within daily routines, and support for functional and community communication skills. Progress is regularly monitored and reviewed to ensure goals are met.

Occupational Therapy (OT)

OT is delivered using a similar tiered approach. Universal provision includes an individual Sensory Plan shared across education and care, staff guidance and training, support for maintaining a low-arousal environment, contribution to college-wide goals, MDT involvement, and ad-hoc support.

Targeted OT support may involve personalised programmes focusing on sensory regulation, fine and gross motor skills, emotional regulation, daily living skills, group or 1:1 sessions, and support for community access. Progress is closely monitored to ensure outcomes are achieved.

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS)

All students receive PBS input overseen by the Behaviour Practitioner. Each student has an individual Positive Behaviour Support Plan, developed collaboratively with the MDT, family, and key staff. Provision includes direct and indirect support, staff guidance and training, contribution to a low-arousal environment, MDT participation, and responsive input during incidents or periods of increased need. PBS strategies are embedded across education and residential provision to promote consistency, learning, and wellbeing.

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is provided by a qualified clinician who attends the college once per term. All students have access to support tailored to individual needs, integrated across their wider programme. This includes functional mobility and rehabilitation support for students with mobility challenges or post-injury rehabilitation, individualised programmes to develop strength, coordination, and recovery, access to scheduled clinics, and collaborative working with teaching and residential staff to ensure consistent support.

Physiotherapy can help build physical independence, confidence in mobility, and engagement in daily activities, complementing the college’s wider focus on holistic development.

Health Support

An on-site College Nurse is available five days a week, overseeing health and medication needs in collaboration with education and care teams. The nurse provides health checks, minor injury support, guidance on physical and mental health, and health education including nutrition, hygiene, immunisations, and healthy lifestyles. This role is integral to the college’s multi-disciplinary approach to wellbeing.

Music Therapy

Music therapy is a clinical intervention using music to support physical, cognitive, emotional, and psychological development. Sessions are tailored to individual needs and aligned with EHCP or clinical goals.

The resident music therapist works 1:1 or in small groups, collaborates with staff, and participates in therapy meetings to maximise the impact of interventions across all areas of college life.

Music therapy supports self-expression and self-exploration, motor skills development, building relationships, emotional regulation and anxiety management, reflection and a supportive environment, physical and mental wellbeing, confidence, initiation and communication skills, and creativity.

Mental Health Support

Cambian Lufton College provides regular mental health support through on-site visits, virtual consultations, and communication with families and stakeholders, including access to emergency out-of-hours support.

Key aspects include psychiatric input with access to guidance and support from a psychiatrist, medication management in collaboration with healthcare professionals, and multi-disciplinary engagement supporting staff and families with strategies to promote wellbeing and implement trauma-informed approaches.

Students receive timely, personalised mental health support, including psychiatric oversight, integrated across educational and residential settings to support emotional regulation, engagement, and preparation for adulthood.
