Ahead of the new term, Lufton College hosted a sports taster session for some of our Manor Farm students to begin introducing them to the game of cricket and to encourage physical activity, teamwork, and most importantly – fun!
Across the morning, time was spent outdoors enjoying the beautiful weather, taking part in a range of activities including various ball games and sensory play. Music added to the atmosphere, helping to create a fun and relaxed environment.
One student had a particularly positive first experience of cricket, taking part in the session alongside peers. Staff provided clear, step-by-step instructions, and they were able to learn the basics of the game. It was a delight to witness the growth in confidence as the session progressed.
Following the cricket session, a number of students then enjoyed dinner together in the courtyard, making the most of the sunshine and further strengthening social interaction and a strong sense of community.
While this was an enrichment activity, it also reflects the ethos of Lufton College, that learning happens everywhere. Every opportunity is used to support students in developing skills, confidence, and independence, and the learning never stops, even in the most enjoyable and informal moments.
Cricket can offer a wide range of developmental benefits, particularly in supporting both physical and social communication skills. The game naturally strengthens hand–eye coordination, as players must track the ball, judge its speed and direction, and respond with accurate timing when batting. It also encourages anticipation and prediction, as students learn to think ahead about where the ball may travel and what action they need to take next, helping to build sequencing and problem-solving skills in real time.
Beyond the physical benefits, cricket is highly valuable for communication and social interaction, requiring students to work closely with each other. This includes important non-verbal skills such as eye contact, body positioning, and reading cues from others during play. Together, these support confidence, engagement, turn-taking, and shared enjoyment within a fun and motivating shared activity.
It was a fantastic opportunity for students at Lufton College to try something new, build confidence, and enjoy shared experiences together as we head into the new term.
