Dear Parents, Carers, Family and Friends,
Now that the first half term has come to an end and the two-week break is underway, we wanted to share a few highlights from the past few weeks and celebrate some of the progress our students have made.
It has been a busy start to the year at Lufton. We have welcomed new students to college and are looking forward to welcoming others shortly. Starting somewhere new and adjusting to different routines can take time for everyone involved, including families, and we know that there are challenges along the way. However, alongside these - we have seen plenty to celebrate.
This half term, students have been working on their independent living skills, communication and improving confidence. We have seen progress in many different areas with road safety, making choices in the community, following recipes, preparing meals and taking responsibility for everyday tasks. Students have also been developing their literacy and numeracy skills as well as working alongside peers, contributing to group discussions and taking part in college activities. Some students have also been working towards their driving theory test, developing their knowledge and understanding as they work towards this exciting goal.
It has been lovely to see students trying new activities, building relationships and taking steps towards their individual goals. We are proud of the effort they make every day, and of the progress that can come from small steps.
Some of our students are continuing their Duke of Edinburgh's Award journey, with students who have achieved Bronze now working towards Silver, while others are just starting their Bronze Award. The award gives students opportunities to get involved in their communities, help others and make a positive difference. Along the way, they develop valuable skills such as teamwork, communication, problem-solving and independence, all of which can strengthen their CVs and support future employment opportunities. We look forward to seeing what they achieve as they continue their journeys.
We have enjoyed some seasonal fun, including a pumpkin-picking trip to Fairfield Pumpkins and a range of Autumnal arts and craft activities at college.
This half term, we welcomed Emma France, our Independent Careers Adviser, who met with students to discuss their interests, aspirations and future options. Emma works alongside Kerry, our Head of Department for Employment, who co-ordinates work experience placements and supports students to explore opportunities to develop their skills in real workplace settings. Together, their work helps students consider the different possibilities available to them as they prepare for life beyond college.
We know that the two-week break looks different for every family. For some students, spending time at home with family is a welcome opportunity to relax, while for others, a change to their usual college routine can take some getting used to. We understand that this can sometimes be difficult for students and families, particularly when arrangements change. Please remember that it is okay if things take a little time to settle, and we hope the break brings some enjoyable times together.
For our residential students staying at Lufton, there is plenty to look forward to! The team has lots of activities planned, both on site and out in the community, with opportunities to have fun, enjoy favourite activities and spend time together. Although college teaching is on a break, our residential team will continue to support students throughout.
We are still waiting for a number of families to return their photo and media permission forms. A new copy of the form is attached to this email for anyone who has not yet completed one. Please ensure that a form is completed and returned for every student, regardless of your preferences regarding photo and media permissions. This allows us to keep our records up to date and ensure that we have your wishes clearly recorded. Thank you to everyone who has already returned their form.
With the clocks having changed and the evenings getting darker earlier, we know this time of year can bring additional changes for some students. We hope everyone has a safe, happy and restful half-term, wherever they are spending it.
Although college teaching is on a break, Lufton remains open throughout half term. If families need any support or have any concerns during the break, please do not hesitate to contact the college via main reception, 01935 403120.
For term-time residential students, please note:
- Sunday 8 November: Travel Day - return to residential accommodation.
- Monday 9 November: College education resumes as normal.
If individual return arrangements have been agreed with the college, please continue to follow these plans.
The college calendar is attached for your reference.
Thank you for your continued support - we value the support families provide. We hope you all have a safe and restful half-term break and look forward to welcoming students back in November.
Warm wishes,
The Lufton College Team
