Match of the Day for Cambian Somerset School

21.06.2017

In mid-June, Cambian Somerset School travelled to Magelake Pavilion in Uffculme for a six-a-side football match against Devon School.

It was the first sports fixture that the school have participated in and the young people had been busy preparing in the lead up to the big game!

Upon arriving at Magelake, the Somerset team were quickly into their warm up, looking the part in their brand new football kit. Unfortunately kick-off was delayed due to the Devon team getting lost on their way, but the students used this opportunity wisely; honing their skills and taking on plenty of refreshments before kick-off.

The first half was tense with both teams taking plenty of chances.  Team Somerset started the game well ensuring that they passed the ball quickly to move pass the Devon defence, who was instrumental in midfield; shutting down opposition attacks and breaking up play to give Somerset the edge.

Throughout this half the Somerset goal keeper made some excellent saves to keep the Devon strikers at bay.  A first half hat trick enabled Somerset to go into the half time break leading 3-2.

The second half saw a rejuvenated Devon side quickly equalise and then take the lead shortly after the break. However, Somerset did not allow their heads to drop and continued to make chances at the other end.

The Somerset team managed to get in another 2 goals, however, it was to end in heart break for the students from Somerset. A goal from a Devon teacher (which the referee dubiously allowed to stand) took the game beyond Somerset, and despite Somerset going close in the final moments the game was to finish 6-5.

The game was played in great spirits and, despite the result going against the Somerset team they did not allow this to affect their mood. Each and every member of the team played the game with a positive attitude and showed great sportsmanship throughout.

All of the young people did themselves proud and are eagerly awaiting their next fixture.
