Proud Steps in Horsemanship

18.09.2026

We are absolutely thrilled to share an update on our students' wonderful journey into equestrian education! Over the past few weeks, our riders have been visiting the stables, building a beautiful foundation in horsemanship.

Working with horses offers a unique, sensory-rich environment where students can thrive at their own pace. It encourages calmness, coordination, and physical confidence while building a special bond with a gentle animal.

Here is a look at the fantastic practical skills our students have been building together.

Horse Riding

Hands-On Care: Grooming & Tacking Up

Before riding, our students spend valuable time on the ground connecting with the horses. These activities are wonderful for developing fine motor skills and tactile confidence:

  • Grooming with Care: Using brushes, students enjoy the sensory experience of grooming, learning how to keep the horse happy, clean, and comfortable.
  • Identifying Tack: Through hands-on practice, riders are learning to recognise essential gear like the saddle, bridle, and stirrups.
  • Tacking Up: With step-by-step guidance, students help place the saddle and bridle, practicing gentle coordination and sequencing.

Working Together: Walking and Leading

Handling a horse safely builds a sense of leadership and personal space awareness. Our students have been practicing how to guide a horse by the lead rope while standing safely by its shoulder. This exercise helps students practice spatial awareness, teaching them to stay clear of the horse's back legs and remain mindful of their surroundings.

Walking Horse

In the Saddle: Balance and Movement

Once mounted, the rhythm of the horse provides excellent sensory feedback that supports core strength and balance. Students are practicing sitting tall and relaxed in the saddle. They are doing a fantastic job using clear, simple "Walk On" commands and gentle aids to move forward and come to a smooth halt.

Growth Beyond the Saddle

  • Superb Listening Skills: The arena is a focused space. Students practice listening closely to instructor directions and responding to their horse's needs, which greatly boosts real-time focus and processing.
  • Safety Awareness: Being around large animals naturally helps students practice emotional regulation. They learn to use quiet voices, move deliberately, and stay calm to keep themselves and the horses safe.

We are incredibly proud of how every student has adapted to the barn environment, showing wonderful patience, bravery, and teamwork. We look forward to watching their confidence and smiles grow each week!
