Blue Light Open Day brings emergency services to life for our young people
On Sunday young people and staff from Whinfell enjoyed a wonderful Blue Light Open Day, when local emergency services and community partners came together to give the community an unforgettable, hands-on experience.
Representatives from North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust, Bay Search & Rescue, North West Air Ambulance Charity, Cumbria Police, North West Blood Bikes Lancs & Lakes, Casualties Union and Cumberland City Council ran displays and stalls throughout the day.
Our young people toured the stations, met crews, and explored the vehicles and specialist equipment used to keep our communities safe.
The event was lively and busy, with plenty of practical activities that encouraged engagement and curiosity. Young people tried out role-play scenarios, handled equipment under supervision, and took part in demonstrations. A particular highlight (and lots of laughter) came when some young people had the chance to “lock” staff in the back of a police vehicle — a brilliant example of how playful, supervised interaction can build confidence and positive relationships with emergency services.
This visit supported several of our core aims: reducing anxiety around unfamiliar adults and noisy equipment, developing social and communication skills, and strengthening links between our students and the local community. Staff reported excellent levels of engagement and reflection from the young people who afterwards spoke about how interested they were in the roles they saw.
We are extremely grateful to all the emergency services and partner organisations who gave up their time to come in, share their expertise and create such a positive experience.
