Great Dunmow School was filled with creativity, colour and fun as students came together to celebrate Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), a traditional Mexican celebration that honours and remembers loved ones who have passed away.
Students enjoyed a fantastic range of activities throughout the morning, including a special Day of the Dead-themed Dungeons & Dragons game, pumpkin carving, biscuit decorating and adding a little sparkle with temporary tattoos and face gems. There was also time to relax and enjoy a film together, making a wonderful atmosphere of learning, creativity and community.
Food was an important part of the celebrations, with students getting the chance to try pan de muerto, a sweet bread traditionally enjoyed during Día de los Muertos. This gave everyone a taste of the traditions associated with this special occasion.
Students also learnt about the ofrenda (offering altar), a central part of Día de los Muertos celebrations. Ofrendas are created to honour and remember loved ones, often decorated with photographs, flowers, candles and favourite foods. Learning about the meaning behind these traditions helped students gain a deeper understanding of the cultural significance of the celebration.
It was fantastic to see so many students getting involved, trying new things and discovering more about Mexican culture. The day was a great opportunity to celebrate traditions, explore new experiences and bring our school community together.
